He is constantly interrupting the story to admit that what he's just told you is made up, conversations or events that he imagined must have taken place, or that he created them to bridge small gaps in the narrative. But while Martel seemed mostly overwhelmed by the existential weight of the Holocaust, Binet seems disgusted with the artificiality of fiction. Just as Yann Martel's novel Beatrice and Virgil struggled to find a way to represent horrific reality in the guise of fiction or literature, so does author Binet struggle with the idea of novelizing actual events. ![]() At the same time, it is the author’s record of his difficulty in telling the story.
